Dr. Salim Hayek is a cardiologist and NIH-funded physician-scientist with expertise in cardio-oncology, heart failure, general cardiology, and imaging. He currently serves as the Medical Director of the University of Michigan’s Frankel Cardiovascular Center Clinics, the largest multi-disciplinary cardiovascular center in the UM system. Dr. Hayek's research expertise lies in bench-to-bedside translational science, where he focuses on deciphering the mechanisms of inflammation underlying the association between kidney and cardiovascular disease. He also utilizes novel biomarkers and high-throughput technologies such as proteomics in risk-prediction, personalization of therapy, and implementation of preventive strategies.Dr. Hayek has authored over 160 peer-reviewed publications, many of which have been published in the highest impact journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Nature Medicine, British Medical Journal, Diabetes Care, Circulation, Circulation Research, JACC, Nature Genetics, and others. His works have been cited over 7000 times, with an h-index of 44 and i10-index of 107. Dr. Hayek's contributions have been recognized through several prestigious awards, including the American College of Cardiology Douglas P. Zipes Distinguished Young Scientist award, American Heart Association Samuel Levine Early Career Investigator award, Juanita L. Merchant Early Career Endowment award, and the Jerome W. Conn Award for Excellence in Research.
