Dr. Anna Köttgen is a Professor of Genetic Epidemiology at the University of Freiburg, Germany, and an Adjunct Professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She obtained an MD from the University of Freiburg and an MPH from the Johns Hopkins University. Her research focuses on the use of epidemiological methods to understand kidney function in health and disease. For this purpose, her group uses both population- and patient-based studies to employ both targeted and unbiased genetic and metabolomic approaches to identify determinants and correlates of kidney function and disease. A special focus of the Köttgen group is the identification and characterization of genes associated with complex kidney diseases, and the investigation of the kidney’s role in the handling of small molecules in health and disease. The ultimate goal of this research is to better understand mechanisms underlying complex kidney diseases, and to identify novel treatment targets for chronic kidney disease.
