Elmi is an international leader in the healthcare sector, president elect of the international Transplantation Society (TTS), council member of the South African college of Surgeons (SATS) and International Chapter leader for the American College of Surgeons (ACS). She holds clinical as well as business qualifications in South Africa and England, as well as a fellowship in the USA. She had been the chair of the Declaration of Istanbul Custodian group, and the South African Transplant Society and currently participating in one of the Expert groups of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) , the World Health Organization Transplantation Taskforce and the Pontifical Academy of Science taskforce on Transplantation. In 2016 she was the winner of The Transplantation Society (TTS) Women in Transplantation Hero award, and in 2014 she was the winner of the CEO Magazine’s most influential woman in Business and Government Africa.
