Áine Burns studied medicine in University College Cork medical school graduating in 1983. Her background is as a physician specializing in kidney disease. She has been a consultant nephrologist at Royal Free NHS Foundation Trust since 1992 and the director of postgraduate medical education since 2008. She was appointed UCL professor of post-graduate medical education and nephrology in 2017. She is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians since 1994 and an elected council member since 2017. In 2020 she was elected vice president for education and training for a three-year term. She has served on the executive of the British Renal Association and chair of its education and training board. She is married with 5 children 3 of whom are following medical careers.
