Dr. Wasse is a Professor of Medicine and the Muehrcke Professor of Nephrology at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL. She joined Rush in 2016, and serves as Vice-Chairperson for Clinical Operations in the DOIM and is the Director of Interventional Nephrology, focused on the planning and maintenance of dialysis vascular access for patients with kidney diseases. An internationally renowned physician and scientist, Dr. Wasse formerly directed the Interventional Nephrology Program at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. Dr. Wasse has combined her clinical work in interventional nephrology with clinical and translational research in the field of hemodialysis vascular access and is one of the few U.S. interventional nephrologists whose research has been supported by National Institutes of Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Dr. Wasse’s research focuses on the predictors, consequences, and treatment of arteriovenous access dysfunction. She seeks to characterize the key mechanisms, pathways, and genes involved in dialysis access dysfunction. Most recently, Dr. Wasse completed a two-year term as the first female president of the American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology and is involved in a variety of local and international scientific and educational programs. A dedicated educator, she has intensively mentored and taught numerous fellows, residents, and medical students.
