Hot Debate on SGLT2i: Metabolic versus Hemodynamic Effects

31 Mar 2023 11:45 12:45
Plenary Halls 2 & 3
Sinee Disthabanchong Chairperson Faculty of Medicine, Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol UniversityThailand
Tobias Huber Chairperson University Medical Center Hamburg-EppendorfGermany

Session Description:
This hot debate will aim to better appreciate the relative contribution of metabolic and hemodynamic effects of SGLT2 inhibitors. SGLT2i of different classes have demonstrated a very important renal protection in both diabetic and non diabetic patients, suggesting that their degree of protection may be unrelated to the control of glycemia. While renoprotection was initially thought to be related to their hemodynamic effects on the tubule-glomerular feedback, emerging data support a direct metabolic effect of these agent on renal cell metabolism. There will be an exploration of the understanding that we currently have regarding these mechanism of renoprotection that will help the audience to differentiate SGLT2i from other renoprotective agents.

Learning Objectives:
An appreciation of the hemodynamic effects of SGLT2i in diseases of both metabolic and non metabolic origin. An appreciation of the metabolic effects of SGLT2i in renal cells and other cell types. An appreciation of the metabolic effects of SGLT2i in renal cells and other cell types.
