Dr. Charles Alpers is the Nelson Fausto-Ann De Lancey Professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA, USA. He is the former Interim Chair of the Department of Pathology, former director of the University of Washington Medicine Renal Pathology Service and founding Director of the Renal Pathology Fellowship. At the University of Washington, he directed a large renal biopsy pathology service for 30 years. His research interests focus on models of diabetic nephropathy and mechanisms that mediate progressive glomerular injury in experimental models of glomerulonephritis and on translational studies in patients. His commitment to enhancing the practice of diagnostic renal pathology is reflected in his participation in the Kidney Precision Medicine Project. He has served as councilor and president of the Renal Pathology Society. He has served as Associate Editor of The American Journal of Pathology and JASN, Pathology Editor of the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology and serves on numerous editorial boards of journals in nephrology and pathology. He has co-organized and co-directed the courses in renal pathology at the World Congress of Nephrology meetings in 2007, 2009, 2011, and 2013 and participated as a lecturer in the 2015 and 2017 course and co-directed or directed the course in renal pathology at the annual meeting of the American Society of Nephrology from 2013-2017.
