Dr Chula Herath MD, FRCP, FCCP is a Consultant Nephrologist practicing in Colombo, Sri Lanka. He was instrumental in commencing the nephrology and kidney transplant unit at Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital (SJGH) in 1993. SJGH is one of the biggest tertiary care hospitals in Sri Lanka with 1100 beds including a Nephrology unit with 41 beds and a 14-station hemodialysis unit. He has been a past President of the Sri Lanka Society of Nephrology and is in the regional council for South Asia in the International Society of Nephrology. He is an advisor on renal medicine to the Ministry of Health Sri Lanka. He has been the supervisor for more than 40 trainees in Nephrology who are now working as consultant nephrologists in Sri Lanka, Australia and United Kingdom. His research interests include chronic kidney disease in agricultural communities, diabetic nephropathy and post-transplant infections and has many publications on these topics.
