Carmen. Avila-Casado M.D., PhD - Biographic Sketch I received my AP training in Mexico City. After being honored with an ISN Fellowship award, I completed a 3-year Clinical and Research Renal Pathology fellowship at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard University, followed by a PhD at the National University of Mexico dedicated to the study of models of collapsing glomerulopathy. I have served as Chair of Pathology at the Instituto Nacional de Cardiologia in Mexico City for 12 years. Now I am appointed Professor of Pathology at the University of Toronto: I am currently the Director of Education and Director of the Electron Microscopy Lab: Renal Pathology Program Director and Consultant for several hospitals and Staff Renal Pathologist at the Toronto General Hospital, UHN, Toronto, Canada. I have held the position of Secretary, Treasurer and President of the Mexican Institute for Research in Nephrology (IMIN). I have been invited to participate in academic activities organized by the ISN (Renal Pathology course in Milan), IPNA, ASN and USCAP. Since 2007 I serve as a member of the ISN/GO (previously Comgan) Committee devoted to get excellence in renal pathology over the world. I am currently the Co-Chair of the ISN Renal Pathology Working group. Also, I am the Secretary of the Renal Pathology Society and Educational Ambassador of the ISN principally focused in Latin America. My academic interests encompass teaching renal pathology, diagnostic renal pathology and research. I have been the research supervisor/ tutor of 40 MD, M.SC and PhD postgraduate students. My scientific literature includes 86 scientific publications as author or coauthor including 2 in Nature Medicine, and 12 book chapters. My line of research is devoted to the study of the podocyte. In the last 15 years, I have received numerous research grants on my own and in collaboration with different groups.
