Maria F. Gomez is Professor of Physiology at the Department of Clinical Sciences, Lund University and Director of Lund University Diabetes Centre (http://www.ludc.lu.se), with ~320 staff members working towards improved diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diabetes. She’s also Honorary Skou Professor at the Faculty of Health, Aarhus University, Denmark. After medical school, Professor Gomez completed her Ph.D. in physiology at Lund University (1998) and post-doctoral studies in Pharmacology at the University of Vermont (2001). She has published ~136 scientific contributions and supervised 11 PhD theses, 13 post-docs and more than 30 undergraduate/master students. She coordinates IMI2 project BEAt-DKD (Biomarker Enterprise Attacking Diabetic Kidney Disease; https://www.beat-dkd.eu/), a public private partnership focused on identifying drug targetable pathways and biomarkers of disease progression and treatment response in DKD. She was scientific coordinator of efforts leading to novel animal models of diabetic complications (2009-2015; https://www.imi-summit.eu/) and leader of the COVID Symptom Study Sweden, an initiative launched to support vital COVID-19 research with >4,7 million contributors globally (https://www.covid19app.lu.se/).
