Dr Hooi completed her medical degree MBBChir (Cambridge UK) in 1982, practiced nephrology and medicine at Sultanah Aminah Hospital, Johor Bahru, Malaysia for 34 years, becoming Head of Department of Medicine and National Head of Nephrology Service for the Ministry of Health. She retired from this position in 2018. She was President of the Malaysian Society of Nephrology 2004 – 2006 (council member 2000 – 2016). She has been a member of ISN since 1988, represented Malaysia on the ISN OSEA-GO committee from 2010 – 2019 and was a member of KDIGO Board 2010 – 2013.She had coordinated several multinational trials in Malaysia and has more than 60 publications. Currently she is the chairman of the Nephrology Medical Education Committee of Malaysian Medical Council. She was Scientific Program Deputy Chair of the World Congress of Nephrology, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in February 2022 and is editor of the Malaysian Dialysis and Transplant Registry.
