Dr Ahmed Kalebi MBChB (Nbi) MMed Path (Nbi) FC Path (SA) FCPath (ECSA) is a Consultant Pathologist in independent practice (at Ahmed Kalebi Consultancy), having been the Founder and Retired Managing Director/CEO of Lancet Group Laboratories in East Africa, which is one of the leading and largest independent private laboratories in the region [2009 - April 2021]. He took a 3-4 years career-break / sabbatical from corporate and clinical laboratory practice from April 2021, currently focusing on family, self-care, social justice projects and incubating future ventures. He is also pursuing a PhD in Public Health looking at Inequity in Laboratory Medicine at the University of Cape Town since January 2022.He undertook his undergraduate medical degree and postgraduate training in general pathology at the University of Nairobi.He had further fellowship training in Anatomical Pathology at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg South Africa 2006-2009, with elective fellowship training in renal pathology at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford England in 2008 under Prof Ian Roberts, both through scholarship from the British Division of the International Academy of Pathology (IAP). He is a founding fellow and was the steering chairman of the College of Pathologists of East, Central and Southern Africa (COPECSA). He is also the current President of the East African Division of the International Academy of Pathology (EADIAP), in which he was the founding secretary in 2010.He has been an Honorary Lecturer at the University of Nairobi and has published over 20 articles in peer-reviewed journals, authored and contributed in several books related to pathology, as well as regularly participating in international conferences as an invited speaker and submitting abstracts. He previously served as the first pathologist in Garissa - North Eastern Province of Kenya. His areas of interest include renal pathology, dermatopathology, infectious disease pathology, surgical-oncology pathology and advocacy for improved diagnostic pathology in under-served regions. He has received numerous professional awards including ‘Young Achievers Award’ from the Association of Pathologists of East Central and Southern Africa (APECSA) in 2006, inclusion in the ‘Who is Who in the World’ since 2009 and the inaugural ‘Top 40 Under 40 Men’ from Business Daily newspaper in 2011. He was also selected in the Power List for three years in a row in 2019, 2020 and 2021 (prior to his career-break) by the Pathologist Magazine featuring top Trail-Blazers in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.He was awarded the Presidential Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW) by the President of Kenya in December 2021 for his services rendered to the country and the international community.He is keen to foster improved accessibility, availability, affordability and acceptability of quality laboratory services across low and middle income countries (LMIC) with particular focus in renal pathology.www.ahmedkalebi.com
